B like Jackie: 1960s Mad Men fashion

When I was young my dad told me how much I resembled Jackie O with my hair pulled back. To be honest, I was young and had no idea who he was referring to at the time. Little did I know that she'd become one of my favorite fashion icons. As of recently I have become obssessed with Mad Men, the show portrays all my favorite 1960s fashion, just like Jackie.

B Met

I know, I know I'm a little late but I can't help but post some of my favorite dresses from The Costume Institute's American Women Gala at the Met Sunday night. So many of these women are becoming new additions to my fashion inspirations.
Sienna Miller in Emilio Pucci... her arm candy isn't too bad looking either.

Camilia Belle in Jason Wu with the designer himself. This dress is stunning and gorgeous red.

Jessica Stam in Rachel Roy. My favorite part of Stam's ensemble are the jewels by Bulgari, statement pendant is gorgeous!

Blake Lively in Marchesa. Props to Lively for sticking to her assets and showing off her legs at the formal event.

Elizabeth Banks in Gucci. I think what I like best about this is that its not something you expect Banks to wear. The lace tights did it for me.

Emma Watson in Burberry. LOVE HER!

Tom Ford in his own design. The man can do no wrong. I always love him.

B Collaborative

There has been a few times when two great individuals have put their energy together to create brilliance. Such as Beyonce and Jay Z, Stella McCartney and Gap Kids (have you seen the shopping bags? adorable) and now there is Jonathan Adler and Seven for all mankind.

If you caught on to the home decor tv show craze then chances are you have seen Jonathan Adler as the Top Design judge. He has made his own success in home design where he is known for bright colors and bold patterns.

Now the decor maven is pairing with Seven for all mankind for a new line due out shortly. Adler's good eye for color and patterns compliments Seven's american industrial aesthetic. Add the belt and scarf to my shopping list-- I can't wait!

B Daytime Datable

A lot of women would agree with me that half the stress of dates is deciding what to wear. Whitney Port is one of my favorite fashion inspirations because she is always willing to take a risk while highlighting her assets.

In a daytime date, Whitney wore a simple dress that was eyecatching with color and kept everything simple. Not that I am any dating expert but in personal experience, guys get easily distracted so keep the accessories minimal. Urban Outfitters is a great place to find bright everyday dresses that can be dressed up or down.

While heels typically are the perfect date accessory it is best to keep them for night rather than daytime. Daytime dates may be a bit more playful and adventurous and last thing you need is a trip to the doctor in result of twisting your ankle. I love Whitney's short ankle boots, try something urban like Whitney or a simple sandal would be great too. I love Sam Edelman's Gigi sandal that comes in a array of colors and very comfortable.

B Dyed

We've come a long way from the seventies days of head to toe tie dye and parties where you created your own shirts. But just like the rest of fashion, tie dye is making a come back.

The Olsen twins have made quite the child star comeback from singing along videos to their newest endeavor, Elizabeth and James. Elizabeth and James, named after their parents, has created amazing pieces that have great tailoring and draped fit. They take classic pieces but have a spin. In a down time during work I spotted their Overdyed Drape Back Jersey Tee and my obsesesion with tie dye was ignited.

When looking for tie pieces stick to classic shapes. This is a trend that you don't want to over due or you'll look dated. Some great pieces are coming from Rebecca Minkoff and Tory Burch. Tory Burch whole new collection is focused on blue tie dye. Both of these designers are staying true to sticking to one trend though Minkoff can't resist a few studs here and there but who can blame her?

B Impulsive

We all have experienced impulse shopping. It is why stores have all the trinkets in the cashier waiting line. It's the last minute thoughts that you see, love, must have. I just experienced this in record time via twitter. Thank's to DVF's quick tweet of the introduction of their iPhone cover, I saw, I purchased in less than 3 minutes flat.

I recently have had an incident with my iPhone front screen shattering and every comment I receive is "you should have a case on it". Well personally while its not always practical, I am more about aesthetic than function and thanks to DVF I can have both!

The case was created to promote DVF's newest iPhone application where you can find runway updates, DVF video, shop finder (HELLO! best feature when in a new city), exclusive products and music. Successful companies have caught on that this is a great new way to connect to their consumer and just gives me another excuse to love my iPhone.

B Perfect

Everyone always has a 'go to' item. I found mine while shopping for an ensemble appropriate for a bridal shower. It was a last minute add on that I found to compliment my upcoming spring wardrobe perfectly! Pair it over a t-shirt, dress or behind a blazer. I've already done it all and can't wait to wear it this weekend. It's just the perfect accessory to be that finishing touch!

B Prepared

When I go to tell someone about what I am working towards I typically always get the question, "what do you want to do after you graduate?" My always open answer is I want to be part of the fashion industry. "Good luck" was a recent response I received. This kind of response typically might upset some but for me it motivates. I am always looking for as much advice as possible that I can consume during the next year countdown till graduation. This morning I was looking at internships (a typical everyday activity for me) and I came across this article posted by freeinternships.com from Ed2010. The article gives you a checklist of things to do before an interview with a potential magazine employer. I found it very helpful and thought must of my readers would too. If you are not aiming to be apart of the fashion industry or work for a magazine I still suggest you read it and take what may be relevant to your desired field.

I came across an amazing section on Ed2010 called “Unsolicited Advice,” and it had a great article called “10 Things to Know Before You Interview” written by Kristin Granero. Because Ed2010 is geared towards those working towards a career in editorial, this article is for you, future fashion magazine editors!
Resume: Check. Perfect interview outfit: Check. Remembering to read the masthead before the interview? Whoops! In this competitive industry, it’s hard enough to land a meeting, let alone the job, and the last thing you want to do is look unprepared. Ed feels your pre- (and post) interview pain,so he put together this list of things to know before you go.

1. How to correctly spell the name of the magazine. Before you meet the editor, you’ll need a killer cover letter. It seems pretty simple, but add a “the” or a capital letter where it doesn’t belong and an editor may not think you belong, either. So remember, it’s Time magazine, not Time Magazine, and CosmoGIRL, not COSMOgirl.

2. The most popular sections. Though the features change from month to month, all magazines contain recurring columns that help distinguish them from other mags. A few examples are Newsweek’s “My Turn,” Ladies’ Home Journal’s “Can This Marriage Be Saved?,” and New York’s “Intelligencer.” If you’re not aware of these defining sections, an editor won’t think you know enough about the magazine to pitch relevant ideas or nail their voice—and you won’t get the gig.

3. The names of the editors. Your interviewer will likely refer to these very important staffers by their first names, and you don’t want to get caught looking puzzled when a Vogue editor mentions Anna. Review the masthead to familiarize yourself with the major players and the more junior editors in the specific department to which you’re applying.

4. The magazine’s audience. Finding out the reader’s average age and the target age (which aren’t always the same), as well as their sex, will help you figure out what types of subjects/celebrities they’d cover. For instance, you wouldn’t find much info on the Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen divorce drama in Seventeen, so pitching an idea on that will get you nowhere with that pub. Check out the magazine’s Web site for the media kit which usually contains this info for advertisers.

5. The dress code. Though that suit worked on your friend’s accounting firm interview, resist borrowing her lucky duds; even at magazines like Consumer Reports and BusinessWeek, you don’t have to be quite as formally dressed. And if you’re applying to a fashion magazine, like Marie Claire or W, show your fashion sense in your interview outfit. And if you’re up for a teen mag job, your clothes should be young and fun—but still appropriate, of course (save your jeans for once you get the job, and put away the cleavage!).

6. Total circulation. Do 2 million subscribe, another million pick it up on the newsstand, and another 3 million read their friends’ or doctors’ copies? If that’s the case, and you mistakenly say the circ. hovers around 100,000, you’re out. You can find this info for free on the Magazine Publishers of America’s (MPA) Web site, magazine.org.

7. Some of the magazine’s recent big stories. If you’re interviewing at Vanity Fair, you better know about the hubbub the semi-nude Miley Cyrus photos created. Editors commonly ask candidates about specific articles they’ve liked or think should have been approached differently. To be prepared, you should read as many back issues as possible (six is a good goal). It’s also smart to be on the up-and-up about any media buzz the mag has garnered; a google news search can help.

8. Its competitors. Though a magazine’s competition (mags in the same niche going after the same readership) isn’t usually the focus of an interview, it can come up. You should know what and who the magazine you’re applying to is up against, as well as what makes it unique from the others (this is also where those special columns and sections come into play). You wouldn’t want to pitch a story for American Baby that Babytalk featured the month before, but you do want to be able to suggest ideas that will give your mag a competitive edge.

9. What each position does within the publication. It’s hard enough deciding exactly what it it is you want to do with the rest of your life; the last thing you need is to settle on a title only to learn that the responsibilities aren’t at all what you wanted. An editorial assistant at a huge magazine may offer few writing opportunities, and even may be 100% administrative. If that’s not the kind of dues-paying you’re into, a mag with a smaller staff may be more your bag. Carefully read the descriptions in the postings, and ask your contacts if they know what duties people in that position at that mag usually have.

10. Its Web content. Now more than ever, magazines are relying on their Web brands to make their presence known and gain readers. At the very least, you should know the mag’s URL (and it’s not always straightforward; it’s redbookmag.com, not redbook.com, for instance), as well as any special features it has (like Cosmopolitan.com’s 30-day blogs). And, especially for teen mags, you should know about its MySpace and Facebook pages.”

Like I said in my last year of school I get alot of questions concerning my after school plans. While some say "you can do it" and others like told above say "good luck" my response is, it is important to do what you love. No matter how hard the industry might be, if you love it you will find your niche and be successful.

B Preppy

Lately I have been very into the rocker look as you can tell by my obsession with my new leather jacket and all things studs. Though everytime I pass by a J Crew I can't help wanting to take a mini vacay to the Hamptons.

Now my aim is not to be one to step right outside an episode of Gossip Girl but Blair Waldorf is a great piece of impsiration. J Crew has the best selection of preppy favorites. J Crew offers most of their basics in array of colors so what does a girl choose with so many options? Navy. Too boring? If you don't own any conservative basic cardigans, navy is a great place to start and such a great shade to compliment with the burnt oranges and bright yellows coming into Spring.

There are a number of different ways you can wear a cardigan. Place it over a cinatge tee you've had for years and give the basic hoodie a rest. Or tone down the top you wore last Saturday night and let it see the afternoon casually.

For my recent obsession with preppy I conveniently tied in my new favorite trend of mixing prints. A pinstripe button down screams prep but paired with a floral sweater from Anthropologie, it gives it a bit more interest and less predictable. While in J Crew don't pass by their accessories, I am in love with their jewelry, hair accessories and belts. Nothing like a classic preppy piece to mix up your wardrobe.

B Alike

One of my favorite blogs is The Satorialist. Real photographs of real fashion. I always get so much inspiration from the fashion he captures through his lens. Here are some photographs of Miroslava Duma, that I absolutely love when he shot her for Harper's Bazaar Russia. I think I just found my celebrity look alike or my want to look like celebrity.

B Trendy

While the groundhog alerted us today that we have 6 more weeks of winter, it is never too soon to start planning your spring wardrobe! I anxiously can't wait for the new spring shipments to come into the stores and once they do I'll be grabbing prints left and right. Mixing prints is a hot trend for spring. Shopbop.com gave a few tips on mixing patterns this spring.

  • Play with complimentary graphic prints
  • Pair prints with similar sensibilities for a pulled-together look
  • Polka dots and stripes are a playfully irreverent pair
  • Stay int he same color family
  • Do variations on a theme in cool neutrals. Add a bright bag for contrast
  • Try two tones of the same print
  • Choose subdued hues for a sophisticated look

More highlights of spring fashion to come: denim distressed vests, cross body bags, lace and sheers

B Reinvented

Every brand goes through a cycle. After their initital launch there is a perception about them that is created and if we all have listened to Heidi we know that in fashion, "One day you are in and the next day you are out." To prevent the out AG Adriano Goldschmied jeans has created themselves a new image. I too myself have become reinvented by returning to my former place of employment retail department store heaven formally known as Nordstrom. This is a plus for you too blog readers as now being first hand in the line of retail I am the last thing that comes between you and walking off with those new jeans so prepare to read even more about my new obsessions.

A plus of returning to retail heaven has been learning about new launches of denim and clearly one of those was AG. All of AG jeans are made in the U.S. in their own facility in Southgate, CA. A rare find for premium denim these days. One of my favorite facts I learned about AG is that they are the only denim label that has 2 different back pockets on every pair of bottoms. There is a significant difference between their left and right pocket that creates the best illusion of your bum!

AG is reinventing themselves to a younger market and have been worn by many celebrities. Some of the celebrity favorites are the tomboy boyfriend fit and also the Premiere skinny style which is my favorite with their 7 year wash. The jean was processed and baked (yes they put them in an oven) to look as if they've been worn for 7 years. Another great part of AG's processing is their 3D whiskering. Some jeans have the whiskering on their jeans all in the wrong spot but AG has put each pair of their jeans on a human walking simulator that creates the vintage wash in the all the right places.

With this new launch of a new look, AG Adriano Goldschmied is reinventing themselves the right way back into the fashion industry. Their denim is continually being mastered to be the fest fit they can be with the best techniques and fabrics. Everyone gets a second chance and AG has gotten it right.

B Caught

I have a bad habit of putting myself in my head and not being able to forget it and till I get it. One night just browsing online at my favorite virtual retailers (never a good way to start) I had this mission to find the perfect leather gloves. I didn't want to be caught red handed (pun intended) in a hideous pair so thankfully I had some inspiration. One of my favorite scenes of the Sex and the City: Movie was when Carrie is running to meet Miranda just in time for midnight, that's friendship. Carrie is shown rocking her iconic fur coat and a pair of white gloves and booties. Who looks this fabulous racing through the snow after they've just awoke? Only Carrie...

Well so I found a lot of options. One of my favorite websites is shopstyle.com because they bring up all your options over the whole internet. Throughout Sex and the City, Carrie has different styles of gloves and I was determined to mind a short cropped leather glove. There were the options that were clearly out of my price range. Such as the $145 Dents Studded Leather Bow Gloves, but seriously if you had the money to spend how to die for are those?

The motorcycle cut off finger tip gloves have been making their comeback to the runway and Alexander Wang even incorporated this trend with his own clutch. You would never lose this clutch at a bar ladies but again $999 was a little out of my price range. So I was waiting for that light bulb moment and then shopstyle did it for me. They previewed a cute pair of studded leather gloves from top shop for only $36. I thought, Top Shop! how could I forget to look there. While I liked the studded leather gloves, I needed ones I loved. And then there, Deep V Kid Leather Glove  in nude was found. I don't white cream or white leather for a couch but in a pair of gloves or hand bag I can't help but imagine luxury. And these are the perfect inspired replica for my Carrie Bradshaw gloves I fell for. All these gloves needs are a new fur vest...

B Captured

Here's my favorite headline of the week!
Fashion's Night Out to Be Repeated in 2010
If you've missed it and been living in a hole the last couple months. Fashion's Night Out was event organized by New York City and the CFDA that brought all retailers together for one night and celebrated shopping! Have you heard of a better reason to celebrate? On September 9th of this year more than 700 retailers stayed open past 11 pm. Designers were in their own stores joining in the madness, free give aways and makeovers were at different locations.  The Olsen twins were making drinks at Bergdorfs and Taylor Momsen played a small concert with her band. Thankfully the New York City mayor and CFDA have agreed to a repeat in 2010. For those of us who unfortunately don't live in the city that never sleeps, book your ticket now. I'll see you NYC for Fashion's Night Out.
